Thorndyke Street Murals

A view of the Thorndyke Street Murals. Click to for location of the MuralsThis was the second project undertaken by the Society was targeted at countering the argument from the Republican community that as a community we have no history.

To demonstrate that this is incorrect we decided to depict a small part of our history and culture on a wall, a wall, which stretches for 129 feet in Thorndyke Street, off Templemore Avenue.

The size of the wall allowed us to depict 12 major events from our past, which tell just part of the history of our community.

A long and protracted debate was undertaken by the Society to decide what events should be included. Eventually a consensus was reached the 12 subjects would be: -

Wall Mural 1 - The Ulster Covenant Wall Mural 7 - Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom
Wall Mural 2 - The Folk Come Home Wall Mural 8 - Hitler Attacks Belfast
Wall Mural 3 - The Lord Protector of the Commonwealth Wall Mural 9 - Defending the Community
Wall Mural 4 - The City is Saved Wall Mural 10 - Unity - Solidarity
Wall Mural 5 - Civil and Religious Liberty for All Wall Mural 11 - Their Loyalty Betrayed
Wall Mural 6 - Better the Grave Than Slavery Wall Mural 12 - Out of the Ashes; New Life

Due to the size of the wall the Society painted additional smaller murals to encompass even more of our history and culture.

The Society spent some 7 months on this project, preparing the wall, helping the fantastic artists and in arranging the splendid opening ceremony in which children and people from the local community dressed in various costumes to illustrate each mural. On that special Saturday night in September 2004 King Billy made a guest appearance in east Belfast.
