Montrose Street Murals

In the early part of 2005 the Society put up a mural, which depicted the poor decisions made by the Parades Commission, the unelected quango set up by the government to adjudicate on parades. The Commission decided that a parade organised by Ulster Defenders of the Realm (LOL710) to remember the murder by PIRA of 2 local members of the Ulster Defence Regiment and members of the Orange Order.

This parade was declared illegal by the Commission yet a parade the following day by an illegal organisation marching in full paramilitary uniform was declared legal. The mural reflects this and has been acclaimed by many. Below are some photographs of the mural during construction and showing the finished article.

Unfortunately due to defacement this mural had to be replaced and the Society paid for a mural to display David Healy’s famous goal against England at Windsor Park on the 7th September 2005. Below are some photographs of the mural during construction and showing the finished article.

Good Friday Agreement MuralAlong with this major mural there was another mural painted in close vicinity of Vicarage Street. This mural expresses the injustice of the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. We are glad to say that this mural is still displayed and is well worth visiting and reading the different points noted.

We would recommend that anyone takes the time to go and visit any of the murals that the Society has taken the time and effort to produce. Many of the murals reflect the feeling felt by the Loyalist/Unionist/Protestant people of East Belfast and indeed the whole province.

We would like to extend out a big thank you to everyone involved with the making of these murals and your work is certainly appreciated by the Society.
