In June 2003 the Society was pleased to open a memorial garden at the bottom of the Newtownards Road in the Pitt Park area. This was the first project of the Society, the project was started in April 2003.
The garden was built by the east Belfast community. The Society asked the local business community and the public in east Belfast to make donations and this they did. As a result the garden was opened on the 28th June 2003 following a memorial parade and opening ceremony attended by thousands of people from across Belfast.
This garden is in memory of not only those murdered by PIRA in east Belfast but 4 men murdered by PIRA in west Belfast. Over the 27/28th June 1970 PIRA launched a string of attacks on the Protestant community in attempt to assert their influence over the Official IRA and the national community. They killed 6 innocent Protestants.
Every June the Society hosts a memorial parade to remember the fallen victims of the PIRA attacks.
We must thank everyone involved in this project and for your continued support. Below are some photographs showing the memorial garden which the Society is very proud off.
