HMS Belfast Mural

The Society decided to undertake a joint venture with the Arts Council and the Re-Imaging Programme and construct a mural dedicated to Europe's last big gun armoured warship of World War II “HMS Belfast”.

HMS Belfast is a light cruiser, launched on St. Patrick's Day in March 1938, served in World War II and in the Korean War and remained in active service until 1963. Since October 21 (Trafalgar Day) 1971 she is open to the public and since 1978 as part of The Imperial War Museum. You will find her in London on the River Thames, upstream from Tower Bridge next to Butler's Wharf.

At the bottom of the mural the Sociaty added the city of Belfast’s Latin motto "Pro tanto quid retribuamus". This is taken from Psalm 116 Verse 12 in the Latin Vulgate Bible and is literally "For (Pro) the much (tanto) what (quid) we shall repay (retribuamus)".

We would like to thank everyone for their help in this project and below are some images of the mural during its construction, launch night and the final product which is well worth taking the time to come to Tower Street and pay the mural a visit.
